“King of Devon” Wins Grand Prix For 12th Time

McLain Ward has a special affinity for the Devon Horse Show, a ring he calls "home."

DEVON, PA — Before a packed grandstand of cheering fans, McLain Ward, also known as the “King of Devon,” won the $250,000 Sapphire Grand Prix jumping competition Thursday night at the 126th annual Devon Horse Show.

The win marks the 12th time Ward, a four-time Olympic medalist, won Devon’s premier event.

Ward’s horse is named Contagious.

“It’s kind of an amazing journey,” Ward said after the win in a statement provided by Phelps Media Group, Inc., Wellington, Fla.

“I always grew up watching my father here. and this is such an important event for all of us,” Ward continued. “This ring for me has really become my home. I get great energy from the crowd, I love it, and no matter how many places I go in the world and great experiences I get to have, I love coming back here.”

McLain, 46, resides with his wife, Lauren and daughters, Lilly and Madison, in Brewster, N.Y., and Wellington, Fla.

The horse show and country fair continues tomorrow through Sunday, June 5. The gates open at 8 a.m. and close at 10 p.m.
