Local Sudents Honored for Eagle Efforts

Students from The Vanguard School worked to establish a special national day to celebrate the bald eagle’s symbolism and dramatic recovery from the brink of extinction. Students composed letters to Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett requesting that he proclaim June 20 (2013) American Eagle Day.

During the summer, Governor Corbett passed the resolution for the state of Pennsylvania. The Vanguard School students received copies of the official proclamation at their homes. This was the first political action for all the students involved and it yielded positive results.

Prior to writing letters, students studied the historical significance of June 20th, the day in 1782 that the bald eagle became our Nation’s symbol and national bird, the symbolism of the bald eagle and the importance of continued protection for our national symbol. In addition to learning about the bald eagle, students learned the proper format and language to use in a formal letter.

For several years, the United States Senate and House of Representatives have passed resolutions recognizing American Eagle Day. To date, governors from 41 states have issued proclamations. "American Eagle Day" has not yet been officially established on a permanent basis by our federal government and by all 50 state governments; however, efforts continue to make this a national day of recognition.
