Newtown Road Strewn With Rocks, Debris

Storm Causes Rocky Road in Easttown

The heavy thunderstorms that rattled the area in the early morning hours Wednesday are being blamed for a rocky road mess on Newtown Road in Easttown that was still not cleaned up as of Thursday evening.

Normally it would be an even bigger problem for drivers, but the baseball sized (and smaller) rocks are in the middle of the road near the Darby Creek bridge construction site at South Leopard Road. Because the bridge is closed, thousands of cars that would normally use the road are being detoured and never see the problem.

Even though the bridge is closed, the road is not and the rocks are strewn all over the center of both lanes for about a quarter of a mile near South Leopard, on the south side of the bridge.

How it Happened

Easttown Township Manager Mike Brown says the construction work is not to blame for the mess. Brown tells Patch PECO recently installed new gas lines under the roadway and the rocks were put down when the trench for the pipeline was filled in along the side of the road.

Who's Responsible

Brown tells Patch the intense rainstorms in the early morning hours Wednesday washed the rocks and other debris into the road. Netown Road is a state road, and is not maintained by the township. Brown says he alerted PennDOT to the problem on Wednesday.

As of Thursday at 7 p.m. some of the rocks appeared to have been pushed to the side of the road, but there were still several stretches of rock in the middle of both lanes of Newtown Road.
