“The crib mattresses could create a gap between the mattress and crib ends larger than allowed by federal regulations, posing an entrapment hazard to infants,” the federal Consumer Product Safety Commission says.

Ikea has received two reports of children being trapped; in each case, the child was removed without injury.

Ikea is recalling 169,000 VYSSA-style crib mattresses, the CPSC said, which were sold under the following model names: VACKERT, VINKA, SPELEVINK, SLÖA and SLUMMER. The mattresses were sold at Ikea stores between August 2010 and May 2014.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission advises parents to be sure “there is no gap larger than the width of two fingers between the ends of the crib and the mattress,” as illustrated above. If there is such a gap, the CPSC says parents should immediately stop using the mattress, and should return it to Ikea for an exchange or full refund.
