This year's federal April 17 tax filing deadline is rapidly approaching. If you haven't done your taxes yet, now is probably a good time to starting thinkng about it.

Why the late federal tax deadline this year?

Thank the District of Columbia government for the extra days to file your federal returns this year.  April 15 falls on a Sunday this year. That would normally mean a tax deadline of Monday April 16. This year, however Emancipation Day is celebrated on April 16 in D.C..

According to the IRS Website by "federal law, District of Columbia holidays impact tax deadlines in the same way that federal holidays do; therefore, all taxpayers will have two extra days to file this year."

You can request an extension of time to file your federal taxes but be aware.

The filing deadline for people requesting an automic extension is October 15 and is not pushed back because of D.C. government holiday.
