Why are you seeking elective office?: School board decisions lead to a direct impact on residents living in our district. School board directors should be held accountable by residents and students. This past year has shown that the organization is necessary and difficult decisions constantly need to be made.
No single decision normally leads to unanimous approval by the community at large. This is why it is important to have a board of directors that can listen, review, strategize, decide and implement. As a seat has opened up, I am willing to commit to the four-year term and preserve and improve upon the great community and district we live in. I am ready to serve the T/E community.
The single most pressing issue facing our school district is: Safe, effective return to school for all students and staff. It takes the will of the board to listen to local health officials and review the number of cases locally in order to make the decision. There is an in-person and virtual model currently in place at the high school level and there are students who have thrived in both models and those that have not.
We need to constantly review the decisions of the board to see if this is translating to the success of the young people and we need to have systems in place to be adaptable to those students who are not thriving.
What are the critical differences between you and the other candidates seeking this post?: My experience as a physician allows me to listen, understand, analyze information in order to come to a decision. I am a level-headed and calm person and I hope I can bring a healing mind and attitude to the board.
Describe the other issues that define your campaign platform: Equity in funds distribution from the state and federal level to public charter and private schools is another concern and one I hope the board will work on.
What accomplishments in your past would you cite as evidence you can handle this job?: As a vascular surgeon, I have been part of many traumatic and life-saving procedures and decisions. I believe a good mind and heart are essential in any field. I know I can bring calmness to a chaotic situation and lead effectively by listening to the data and making informed decisions.
I have written various papers in my field and have collaborated with others across many different specialties. The school board is made up of different backgrounds and interests, but we must come together to effectively make smart decisions for our community. I look forward to working with others.
The best advice ever shared with me was: Stop and smell the roses.
What else would you like voters to know about yourself and your positions?: I hope to have your support and confidence and I will listen to concerns in the community and remain focused on solving them.
