Route 401 Closed This Weekend for U.S. 202 Bridge Construction

Detours will be in place Friday and Saturday nights, PennDOT said.

Route 401 will be closed ang detoured on Friday and Saturday nights while construction work is done of the U.S. 202 bridge, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation announced Tuesday.

According to PennDOT:

The weekend operation is part of PennDOT’s $63.3 million project to widen and reconstruct 2.5 miles of U.S. 202 between the Route 401 (Conestoga Road) and U.S. 30. interchanges to improve travel and safety.

Route 401 (Conestoga Road) will close both nights at 8 p.m. The road will reopen the following day by 5 a.m.

Crews will work overnight to demolish the northbound side of the U.S. 202 bridge over Route 401 (Conestoga Road). The bridge is being rebuilt as part of the widening and reconstruction of the northbound side of U.S. 202 between Route 401 (Conestoga Road) and U.S. 30.

The following detours will be in place for Route 401 (Conestoga Road) motorists to follow during the overnight closures:

  • Eastbound Route 401 Detour: Follow U.S. 202 South to the Business U.S. 30 exit, then left on U.S. 30 (Lancaster Avenue), right at the ramp to U.S. 202 North and follow U.S. 202 North to the Route 401 exit; and
  • Westbound Route 401 Detour: Follow U.S. 202 North to the Route 29 North (Great Valley) exit, then right on Matthews Road, right on Route 29 (Morehall Road), left on Swedesford Road to the ramp to U.S. 202 South and follow U.S. 202 South to the Route 401 exit.

All scheduled activities are weather dependent and may be postponed until the following evening in the event of a cancellation due to inclement conditions.

In addition, motorists using Planebrook Road between Swedesford Road and U.S. 30 (Lancaster Avenue) in East Whiteland Township will encounter intermittent stoppages of up to 15 minutes from 8 p.m. Thursday (Jan. 15) to 5 a.m. Friday (Jan. 16) for the removal of beams from the northbound side of the U.S. 202 overpass. Flagger-controlled single lane conditions also will be in place on the road this week (Jan. 13-16) from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Periodic 15-minute stoppages may occur during overnight construction.
