Slippery, Slushy Morning Commute Monday

Speed restrictions have been lifted, but authorities continue to urge caution.

The region awoke from its Super Bowl stupor to a slippery, slushy Monday morning.

Snow that fell Sunday night -- 1.5 inches in Exton, 0.7 in West Chester, 0.5 in Bala Cynwyd -- was mostly washed away by the subsequent rain. Rain is expected to continue into Monday afternoon, the National Weather Service said.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation early Monday morning issued speed restrictions of 45 mph on several area roads, including:

  • U.S. Routes 1, 30, 202, 422, and
  • State Routes 63, 100 Spur and 309.

Those speed restrictions were lifted at 8 a.m. Monday, with PennDOT saying it would continue to treat area roadways until things are clear.

Leading up to the storm Sunday night, PennDOT had 2,250 trucks, 235 rental trucks and 200 additional trucks on stand-by and 5,400 equipment operators to keep roads passable during storms, the agency said.

PennDOT has 539,421 tons of salt on hand, it said, and as of Sunday evening had used 503,860 tons of salt.

PECO on Monday morning was reporting more than 1,000 customers without power in the five-county region.

Monday night will be windy and cold, with a low of 12, the NWS said.

“Any standing water on the roads this afternoon could refreeze as a cold front pushes through the region, so use care and allow extra time on your afternoon commute as well,” the NWS said.

Tuesday will be sunny with a high of 26.
