Storms Cause Closure of Major TT Street

Storms cause roadbed to lift 15 feet in one spot in Tredyffrin Township.

Intense, heavy thunderstorms overwhelmed creeks, damaged roads and forced Tredyffrin first responders and public works crews into action in the pre-dawn hours of Wednesday.

Contention Lane was closed between Conestoga and Old State Roads after debris washed into the road and rushing creek waters by Teegarden Park got underneath the shoulder. Tredyffrin Police Superintendent Anthony Giaimo tells Patch the road surface was lifted several feet by rushing water that got beneath the lip of the black top.  A Public Works employee who was working on the clean up told Patch that one side of the road was seriously eroded, but the other was not. The difference, he expains, is that the eroded side has no curb and water rushes up underneath the lip of the road surface.  On the side with a curb, the water washes over the curb and get underneath the blacktop.

Elsewhere roads were filled with debris in a matter of minutes by the sudden, intense down bursts of rain in the early morning hours.

By mid afternoon, most roads had been completely cleared leaving them passable but in need of repair.  Spoonwood Circle, a small cul de sac that empties on Contention Lane was covered in an inch of two of mud. A public works crew member told Patch much of the muddy mess was caused by run off from a construction site on the circle.
