Tredyffin Public Works Forewarns Sewer Flushing Has Begun

Funny sounds and smells in the restroom? Routine sewer line maintenance may be the reason this week in Tredyffrin Township.

TREDYFFRIN TOWNSHIP, PA — Routine flushing of sanitary sewer lines in happening all week designated areas of Tredyffrin Township, so the public works department forewarns of oddities in the restroom and crews crossing into yards.

The maintenance uses video to examine and pressure to clean and scour lines between manholes. Getting access means in some cases workers may cross onto residential property, the Public Works Department said. "Many of our sewer lines run through right of ways in residents' yards and there may be times when we need to take equipment through the right of ways to access our lines," the township stated.

The Tredyffrin Township Sewer Department issued a list that refers to areas receiving the routine maintenance Oct. 19-24:

"During the flushing process, you may hear a gurgling sound or bubbling in the toilet bowl and in rare cases, a small amount of water may splash out of your toilet bowl itself. The causes of this are air movement from the normal cleaning process from the high pressure line, a plugged roof vent in the home, the sewer line running close to the building or the size and complexity of the home’s waste and ventilation system. To minimize any splashing out of your bowl, make it a habit to keep your lid down," the township explained.

The township said residents may smell sewer gas from their drains. If this occurs, they advise, "Flush your toilet(s) and pour water into your drains."

Township officials assured residents sanitary sewer cleaning does not damage their sewer systems.

"The water may come out in rare cases and comes from water that is normally in your homes system (traps) and not water from the sanitary sewer system in the street," the township noted.
