Heaberg was first appointed to the board in 2011 to fill the vacancy left when Warren Kampf (R-PA 157) resigned to become a State Representative. He then survived narrow primary and general election victories in 2011 to win his at-large seat.
Heaberg succeeds Supervisor John "J.D." DiBuonaventuro as Vice Chairman. DiBuonaventuro remains a supervisor but indicated at the meeting that he wanted more time for other endeavors outside the part time role of supervisor.

DiBuonaventuro became the center of a controversy last year after he posted a letter on the Township's official website that took political shots at a blogger who had been defeated in a 2009 run for supervisor. That controversy ultimately ended up with the township formulating an official policy on who could post items on the official Tredyffrin.org website and outlining guidelines for what can be posted on the site.
