Yang's Market Closes For Good in Berwyn

Five months after a vicious attack on the owner by two teenagers Yang's Market has closed, but a new shop is already going in the space.

Just under five months after 73-year-old Yong Yang was robbed and beaten by two teenagers in the parking lot of his produce store, Yang's Market is no more.

On Thursday, Yang's daughter Chae sent Patch an email confirming what passersby could already see happening. Yang's Market has closed and is being renovated after a sale to Aneu Bistro and Catering owner Meridith McLoughlin.

In her email to TE Patch Chae yang says "The community may have noticed some activity outside and inside in the market.  I had previously informed you that the market was to be sold to long-time employee Mark Morroney.  Unfortunately, after some hard work it was decided by everyone that a different party would have to continue the business.

Meridith McLoughlin, owner of Aneu Bistro & Wine Bar will be new owner of the market.   Meridith has started to renovate the market with plans to reopen in early June with a new and exciting façade and market interior.  Mr. Yang will continue to work part-time in a new produce area and is excited to once again see the people of the community.  We wish Meridith and family continued success and look forward to the community being served once again!"

Aneu's restaurant and catering facilities literally surround the Yang's Market site on Lancaster Avenue in Berwyn. Chae Yang says the new shop will not be called Yang's Market.

Mr. Yang was seriously injured in the attack and has virtually lost his sight in one eye, making it impossible for him to drive to pick up produce for his store. Yang, who immigrated with his daughter from Korea nearly 40 years ago, had continued to work at the market following two eye surgeries.

In April Morroney told TE Patch there were some financial details around the lease of the building that might keep that deal from closing.
