$1M Grant To Bolster Pedestrian Safety At 2 Upper Dublin Schools

UPPER DUBLIN TOWNSHIP, PA —The township is getting a $1.14 million grant to strengthen pedestrian safety around two area schools.

State Reps. Melissa Cerrato and Ben Sanchez —who both represent sections of Upper Dublin Township —announced Tuesday that Upper Dublin Township received a $1.14 million grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.

Funding will go toward connecting sidewalks on Farm Lane to access Upper Dublin High School located on Loch Alsh Avenue and installing a sidewalk along Limekiln Pike to access Maple Glen Elementary School.

The project will also include installing an overhead rectangular rapid flashing beacon within the Limekiln Pike School Zone for pedestrian access to Maple Glen Elementary School.

"This grant will help physically connect the community and ensure safe pathways for children's education. By investing in infrastructure like sidewalks and flashing beacons, we're investing in students’ safety for years to come, and the accessibility of quality education," Sanchez said.

“Pedestrian safety is a huge issue in Upper Dublin around the high school and Maple Glen Elementary, so I’m happy we can bring state dollars home and make the area more walkable – especially for kids in the area,” Cerrato said. “Ensuring the safety of students walking between the two schools is a victory worth striving for.”

The grant comes from the federal Transportation Alternatives Set-Aside.

The program provides funding for projects and activities defined as transportation alternatives, including on- and off-road pedestrian and bicycle facilities, infrastructure projects for improving non-driver access to public transportation and enhanced mobility, community improvement activities, and environmental mitigation, trails that serve as a transportation purpose, and safe routes to school projects.
