Autumn Dance

You came to New Jersey
in the middle of October,
a god traveling incognito
to a wedding.
Smoking your cigarette
in the parking lot,
the low hanging afternoon sun
cast you in gold
your eyebrows ignited
lowering on your high forehead
blue eyes shone pure and clear
mirrored the leaf naked skies
over your haloed head
You opened your mouth
into a broad October O shape,
traced a smoke circle
to net it around my head
You told me your name
and shook my hand
When the full silver and white
Wedding moon arose,
you frowned on my dance
with the incubus who wore your face
turned me from his fast, awkward Twist
waltzed me around the patio
with a Greek god’s vigor,
trying to hide
even Gods must face death
