The din of croaking frogs has ceased
their throats tired and dried out
from the vibrant, midday heat.
Even so, the portable solar shower
perched precariously on a branch of aspen
drips still-too-cold water from its spout.
Camping in Pike National Forest
offers a more classic ritual for cleansing.
Inhaling deeply, I settle my
grimy body to the ground, and
gather my gaze…
I am a voyeur with VIP
privileges, an interloper
in this divine landscape, of
splendid rocky mountain sunshine,
columbines rest in the distant fields,
a fresh and exquisite meadow of
indian paintbrush carpets
neighboring valleys, ablaze
in crimson and purple majesty.
My spirit is steeped
with joy,
as I behold
America naked.
