Police Department to Donate Bicycles to Bryn Athyn Bike Share Program

Bikes that have been recovered as stolen or abandoned by the UMPD will now be donated to a charitable cause.

The Upper Moreland Police Department has an impressive bicycle collection. Unfortunately, these bikes are the byproducts of police actions, namely, they were seized as abandoned or recovered as stolen property.

Speaking at last night’s Public Health and Safety committee meeting, explained that the bikes are impounded in police custody, and after 30 days, the department has the option of donating the bikes.

Nestel said that the bikes, which number around 50, will be given to the Bryn Athyn Bike Share Program.

According to the Bryn Athyn College website, the program rehabs bikes for the shared use of its students.

Nestel said that this arrangement with the bike share program is a one-time deal, and invited anyone within Upper Moreland who has a community group that would benefit from future impounded bicycles to contact UMPD.

He added that owners of abandoned or stolen bicycles have a 30-day period to retrieve their property from the police.

“I’m hoping folks would routinely call us, if their bikes are stolen,” Nestel said.
