St. David School Has a Field Day at Masons Mill
In a long-standing tradition, St. David School holds its annual Field Day event at Masons Mill Park with a tug-of-war, water relays and teacher slimings.
For the first time in history, the entire student body, their teachers and parent volunteers celebrated the school's annual Field Day at Masons Mill Park.
According to event coordinator and school physical education teacher Joanne Carroll, Field Day is an extension of the school's physical education program. However, instead of holding a regular gym class, students are treated to fun, age-appropriate activities.
Field Day, which took place June 13, started at 9 a.m. and lasted until the early afternoon. During this time, older students in grades six to eight participated in basketball and volleyball tournaments, while the younger students participated in games called "Pizza Man Relay" and "Ping Pong Catch."

Carroll said that it is important to communicate a sense of collective team spirit and graceful wining and losing during all the events of Field Day.
“We’re giving points to the team that wins, but we’re also giving points if a teacher or an event leader sees a child is showing exceptional sportsmanship,” Carroll said. “Winning isn’t everything; the Olympic creed does say, ‘In the true spirit of sportsmanship.’”

Many parents volunteered to help facilitate games and activities, as well as distribute snacks and water to the students.
Sue Robinson, a parent volunteer, said that she was happy to see the Field Day events move to Masons Mill Park this year.
“[There are] much larger grounds, which in a way is a good challenge,” Robinson said. “Usually, we were kind of limited to parking lot games. This way we have a huge field to run around in, which is good.”
Robinson is also the mother of Kayla Robinson, a seventh-grade student, who participated in a special Field Day event.
According to Kayla’s teacher, , one of Kayla’s goals for the year was to receive distinguished honors for all of the school’s three trimesters. He also found out that green Jell-O is not one of her favorite desserts.
“So, I was just thinking, ‘What could I do to help Kayla perform well all year long,’” Smith said. “And, in my mind, I came up with this devious plan. If Kayla managed to get distinguished honors all year long, she would get to dunk green Jell-O all over me, and if she didn’t, she would have to eat a giant bowl of it.”
