1. Visit the Peoples Gas Holiday Market.
A quick trip into downtown Pittsburgh brings you to the Peoples Gas Holiday Market in Market Square, where Alpine-style wooden chalets line the plaza with international gifts and local artisan finds. Another local favorite, Dazzling Nights transforms the Pittsburgh Botanic Garden into a mile-long trail of immersive light installations on select dates Nov. 28–Jan. 3. Each section offers something different, from the serene Garden of Reflection to the energetic Disco Snowman maze. Families often time their visit around live entertainment or a warm drink under the towering tree at Shimmering Square. It’s a relaxed, choose-your-own-pace evening that feels close to home but wonderfully tucked away.
3. Stop by Emma’s Kafe & Deli for a cozy lunch break.
Right here in Upper St. Clair, Emma’s Kafe & Deli is the neighborhood go-to for fresh sandwiches, homemade salads, LaPrima coffee and their well-known chicken salad. It’s a convenient stop during a day of errands or before heading to a holiday event, especially with their grab-and-go options. Make sure to stop by during the week, as the deli closes on weekends seasonally.

4. Make a night of ‘The Nutcracker’ by Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre.
If you’re looking for a night out in the city, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre’s beloved production of The Nutcracker returns to the Benedum Center on select dates Dec. 5–28. 5. Experience the ‘Holiday Magic’ of Phipps Conservatory.
Now through Jan. 4, Phipps Holiday Magic transforms the conservatory into a series of lush indoor displays and glowing outdoor pathways, all tied together by this year’s “Wild Winter” theme. Each room reveals something different, from playful topiary animals to bold seasonal blooms arranged in intricate scenes. As daylight fades, the Winter Light Garden fills the grounds with radiant color and gentle motion, creating a peaceful contrast to the city’s bustle. 6. Go ice skating at the UPMC Rink at PPG Place.
While you’re in Pittsburgh, skate by the massive UPMC Rink at PPG Place, open through Mar. 1. Guests are encouraged to dress for gravel paths and winter conditions. While it’s a bit of a drive from Upper St. Clair (about 45 minutes), many locals pair it with a trip into Pittsburgh or a stop nearby, making the outing feel both doable and well worth the distance.
