The Clarks Make the Most of Their Worry-Free Lifestyle at Ann's Choice

Kathy and Mike Clark appreciate the extra space afforded by their second bedroom at Ann's Choice

Mike and Kathy Clark knew exactly where they wanted to live in retirement--at Ann's Choice, an Erickson Senior Living community in Bucks County, Pa.

Kathy's twin sister, Patty Lampi, had already lived in the community for six years, so the Clarks had seen firsthand what a vibrant, engaging lifestyle awaited them.

"We wanted to be here while we'd be young enough to enjoy all the things Ann's Choice has to offer," says Kathy. "We moved in October 2023 and haven't looked back."

While the couple didn't plan on choosing a two-bedroom, one-bath residence, it's a big part of what makes their new life so enjoyable.

Many future residents focus on a home's basics--number of bedrooms, bathrooms, and square footage--but Mike and Kathy's story is a reminder that flexibility is key.

The right fit

Kathy recalls that they started their home search with a wish list that included a second bathroom. But when she and Mike walked into their current corner residence, sunny and spacious with windows on two sides, they knew they'd found "the one."

"I thought I knew exactly what I wanted--a view, two bedrooms, and one and a half baths," Kathy explains. "But when we found this corner home on the fifth floor with beautiful light, I realized I could easily sacrifice the powder room for the extra windows."

For the Clarks, their second bedroom has become the secret to making their home work perfectly for both of them.

"The second bedroom is our bonus space--it's our office, my ironing room, and even our 'phone booth.' If someone needs to take a call, they can close the door and have privacy," says Kathy.

Mike adds, "It's definitely an advantage having that second bedroom. We use it for packing when we travel, which we do a lot! We just got back from Portugal. We've traveled all over--from Disney and the Western Mediterranean to visiting our daughter in North Carolina."

And custom built-ins, an idea inspired by Patty, have helped them make the most of every inch.

"We have built-ins in the closets, our bedroom, and the second bedroom. They've made such a difference," Kathy says. "The extra storage helps keep things tidy and organized."

Less stress, more living

Having moved from a large four-bedroom house, the Clarks appreciate the convenience and ease of their new lifestyle at Ann's Choice.

Mike especially appreciates that their residence is maintenance-free. "I don't miss cutting the lawn, raking leaves, or shoveling snow. When you're playing water volleyball and happen to see [members of the General Services team] shovel snow, you're glad it's not you!" he says.

Without the stress of maintenance and costly home repairs, Mike and Kathy have more time to pursue their favorite hobbies and interests--or try something new.

Mike has discovered a passion for pottery, and Kathy enjoys exercise classes, swimming in the pool, and participating in a card group.

"There's something for everyone," Mike says. "Living here is like a big vacation. You don't sit around unless you want to. There's always something to do. There are so many clubs and activities that keep us moving."

The couple notes that the community's climate-controlled walkways make it even easier to maintain a social lifestyle.

"When it's freezing outside, I can go from our apartment to any of the restaurants on campus without putting on a coat," explains Mike.

Don't wait!

Mike and Kathy now serve as Ann's Choice ambassadors, helping prospective residents navigate the decision-making process. They encourage everyone considering a move to plan ahead and be open-minded.

"Write down your must-haves," Kathy advises. "Then, be willing to sacrifice on the things that matter less. The perfect residence with everything you want is rare. The most important thing is that you get here to enjoy all the activities and friendships waiting for you. There's a lot to do if you want to stay active and plenty of peace and quiet if you don't."

Mike agrees. "All too often, people wait too long. They stay in their house or a 55-plus community and miss out on everything a place like Ann's Choice has to offer," he says. "If you're ready, go for it!"

Given the high occupancy at Ann's Choice, the Clarks recommend joining the Priority List, as it secures your spot in line for your desired floor plan.

With their sunny corner home and an active social calendar, Mike and Kathy are proof that the right community--and the right attitude--can make all the difference.
