Beringer was also charged with involuntary manslaughter before the sentencing.

Charging documents from the case stated that Kanavel died as a result of intoxication from the combined effects of fentanyl, heroin, and Benadryl. Warminster police determined that Beringer dropped the drugs off at Kanavel's home in the 1200 block of Benn Lane.

According to Deputy District Attorney Thomas Gannon, Kanavel, who had previously gone through a rehabilitation program with Beringer years prior, asked for the drugs as she was "dope sick". Kanavel was with her infant child at the time of the drop-off.

Kanavel's family, who were not present at the sentencing, had sent letters to Judge Raymond McHugh asking for the maximum sentence.
