5 Percent Hike In West Chester Taxes Approved For 2024

The council approved the increase to pay for police, road paving, and capital improvements.

WEST CHESTER — Borough Council voted 5-1 Tuesday night to raise property taxes by 5 percent in 2024 to provide services to the residents of the borough.

The $35.7 million budget covers police, fire, emergency services, trash, recycling, streets, recreation, and more.

The average taxpayer living in a house assessed at $178,635 will pay an additional $70 a year in real estate taxes.

Councilman Bernie Flynn voted against the budget Councilwoman Sheila Vaccaro was not present.

Sean Metrick, borough manager, said the increase was required to fulfill staffing needs and provide the highest quality municipal services. The annual police budget amounts to $ 11.1 million.

The budget includes $47,500 for police wages and $210,000 for road paving.

In 2024, the borough will fund 56 police officers.

The fire department’s annual budget is $466,696, and the emergency management department's services are $158,299.
