75-year-old Cyclist Fatally Struck By Police Car: District Attorney

CHESTER COUNTY, PA — Chester County detectives and West Goshen police continued Tuesday to investigate the Feb. 19 fatal crash of a 75-year-old bicyclist struck and killed by a police vehicle Sunday.

Michael Thomas Ghione of West Chester was pronounced dead at the scene after being struck by a Westtown-East Goshen police vehicle early Sunday morning in West Goshen Township.

“This was a heartbreaking incident resulting in a tragic death,” District Attorney Deb Ryan said Tuesday. " We send our deepest condolences to the family of Mr. Ghione. We are conducting a thorough and comprehensive investigation of the crash.”

The identity of the police officer has not been disclosed. Police said the officer was responding to a call when the crash occurred.

Police said a Westtown-East Gosher police officer was responding to a 10:16 a.m. call about an officer colliding with the cyclist.

The initial investigation disclosed the cyclist was riding north on South High Street in the area of the Route 202 overpass when the cyclist was struck by a police vehicle also driving north on the 900 block of South High Street.
