Car Surf's Up: Heavy Rain Makes Messy Monday

Heavy rains cause slow-going and big headaches around the region.

Heavy rains brought Monday afternoon rush hour to a crawl in some places and made a huge splash in others.

In the southbound lanes of West Chester Pike at the U.S. 202 interchange, heavy rain sent some cars surfing as drivers hit a huge but hard-to-see puddle of water. The effect, as seen in the Patch clip attached to this article, was to send huge waves of water into the air and into cars in other lanes in both directions.

The storms prompted the National Weather Service to issue a tornado watch for Chester County and surrounding areas on Monday.

The weather also wreaked havoc with the practice schedule and with fan parking for the U.S. Open Golf Tournament. One of the two major remote parking lots for fans is on the grass at Rose Tree Park in Media, which was forced to close Monday.
