Ex-Kennel Owner Convicted of Dog Neglect In Chester County

WEST CHESTER A 48-year-old Ohio woman is free on $25,000 Monday awaiting sentencing after being convicted by a Chester County jury on a charge of neglecting animals in a pet resort in West Nottingham.

Denise Durfor, 48, Jewell, was the owner of Pleasant Pet Resort in West Nottingham Township, where Roscoe, a 14-year-old Pekinese mix, was being cared for while his owner was on vacation.

Roscoe sustained serious and life-threatening injuries that ultimately resulted in his death.
She is scheduled for sentencing on Feb. 13.

Chester County District Attorney said the loss of a pet was devastating for Roscoe’s family.

“When placing a loved one in the care of others it is expected that they will provide proper care,” she said. “We hope this verdict can bring Roscoe’s family some peace.”

The case was investigated by the Brandywine SPCA and county detectives.

According to court records

  • On Aug 6, 2021, Roscoe was dropped off at Pleasant Pet Resort while his family went on vacation.
  • On Aug. 17, 2021, when Roscue was picked up, the dog was concealed in a towel after a bath.
  • While putting Roscoe in the car, the pet owner noticed the towel had blood on it and saw that his tail was missing.
  • Roscoe was rushed for emergency care and treated for maggots under his eyelid and tail and the exposed vertebrae where his tail was missing.
  • On Aug. 18, 2021, Roscoe was transferred to Willow Run Veterinary Clinic in Lancaster County, for treatment.
  • Throughout the treatment, Roscoe’s health continued to deteriorate, to the point where he had to be euthanized.
