Henderson and Bayard Rustin Schools Named Among Top in Region

CHESTER COUNTY, PA — A yearly evaluation of schools based on state and national education data identified 40 outstanding high schools in the greater Philadelphia area.

Among those named were Westtown Township's Bayard Rustin High School and B. Reed Henderson High School in West Goshen Township as well as Downingtown S.T.E.M. Academy.

Philadelphia Magazine recently published its list of the 40 Top-Rated Public High Schools in Philadelphia and the Suburbs.

The magazine used the data from the Pennsylvania and New Jersey departments of education and the National Center for Education Statistics to look at factors such as enrollment, student-teacher ratio, SAT scores, and students who go on to attend college, among other factors.

Bayard Rustin enrolls 1,296 students, with a 98 percent graduation rate, with 93 percent of graduates going on the college. Its student-to-teacher ratio is 15 to 1, and SAT scores (verbal/math) are 607/594.

Henderson High School enrolls 1,333 students, with a 98 percent graduation rate, with 92 percent of graduates going on the college. Its student-to-teacher ratio is 15 to 1, and SAT scores (verbal/math) are 586/590.

Downingtown S.T.E.M. Academy enrolls 825 students, with a 100 percent graduation rate, with 100 percent of graduates going on the college. Its student-to-teacher ratio is 14 to 1, and SAT scores (verbal/math) are 689/670.

The list features 40 schools, 15 of which are located in the city. The remaining 25 are all suburban schools in Delaware, Chester, Bucks, and Montgomery counties, as well as New Jersey.
