Kerr Park Ida Clean-Up Is Saturday Morning In Downingtown, Fall Fest Sunday

Downingtown Parks and Rec is calling for helpers Saturday morning to clean up the mess left in Kerr Park by Hurricane Ida flooding.

DOWNINGTOWN, PA — Hurricane Ida's flooding rains left Downingtown underwater and the cleanup continues Saturday morning at Kerr Park.

Volunteers couldn't ask for a prettier autumn day to come out and help, and later, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Downingtown's Fall Fest is happening close by.

Downingtown Borough Parks and Recreation is calling for volunteers to come out and help pick up the debris left behind when the East Branch of Brandywine Creek flooded the Kerr Park in the first days of September. A workday is planned for Saturday morning starting at 9:45 a.m., until noon.

Downingtown Parks and Recreation Commission Chair Ryan Handforth posted the call for helpers on social media. He explained Parks and Recreation "is looking for volunteers to help get our parks back in shape after all the damage from flooding due to Ida. We are focusing first on the tennis courts, baseball field, and volleyball courts."

Handforth said fencing at the park is full of creek debris. The goal of Saturday's workday is to start cleaning the fences up and piling the debris along the paved path where Public Works can pick it up.

Parks and Recreation is asking volunteers to show up on the next two Saturdays with the following items, if possible, and if they can to bring extras to share: gloves, rakes, trash bags, water, push brooms, masks, tarps. Gas or electric leaf blowers would be a "nice to have," if anyone is able to bring one.

Volunteers should park along Pennsylvania Avenue or in the parking lot near the gazebo between Pennsylvania and Lancaster avenues.

Parks and Rec advised that the farmers market will be set up Saturday morning and parking may be tight. Volunteers can also park at the library and walk over.

"This will be for the next two Saturdays, so if you can not make it this Saturday we hope to see you next weekend," Handforth added to his post. Questions can be sent to parksandrecreation@downingtown.org.
