Patch Voices: Practice Christmas Tree Safety This Holiday

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), between 2007 and 2011, U.S. fire departments responded to an average of 230 home fires per year that started with Christmas trees. Carefully choosing and decorating your Christmas tree can help reverse this trend. The NFPAoffers these tips:

• Artificial trees should be labeled or certified by the manufacturer as fire retardant
• If selecting a live tree, choose one that has green needles that do not fall of the tree when touched
• Ensure that the tree is a minimum of three (3) feet from any heat source
• Add water daily to the tree stand/base
• Use only those lights that are tested and listed by an independent testing laboratory and designated for indoor use when decorating the tree
• Inspect and replace any lights that are damaged
• Make sure to turn off the lights when you go to bed
• Never decorate Christmas trees with candles

After the holidays

It’s also important that consumers be sure to remove their trees from their homes as soon as the needles start falling off. Dispose of the tree properly by recycling or contacting your local municipality for specific disposal instructions. Also, remove any outdoor electrical lights and properly store them indoors to prevent hazards.
