St. Agnes Kids Give Cancer Patients a Reason to Smile

The kids sewed pillowcases for pediatric cancer patients.

Seventh grade students at St. Agnes School in West Chester recently dedicated an afternoon to creating pillowcases for pediatric cancer patients to use during their hospital stays.

Though the students had guidance, they created the pillows themselves. Under the direction of St. Agnes teachers Jennifer Charney and Eileen Dunn, the students designed, measured, sewed, and ironed 45 fun, bright pillowcases.

The afternoon of service was rewarding, said Charney.

"We want the kids to realize that they can help others in many ways. They are old enough now to become more hands-on in their service, and it doesn't take long for them to recognize that they truly are making a difference."

The pillowcases will be donated to ConKerr Cancer, a volunteer organization that provides the cases to children in 250 hospitals nationwide.

The seventh grade program at St. Agnes has a strong focus on service, providing many similar opportunities for students throughout the year. According to Charney, parent support is crucial.

"We couldn't do so much without the help of the parents that assist in numerous ways, as well. The support is unreal and makes it easy. They are what make Saint Agnes a family!"
