State Police Avondale Barracks Sets Weekend Sobriety Checkpoint

CHESTER COUNTY, PA — State Troopers will be stopping vehicles at a sobriety checkpoint on Friday and Saturday, the Avondale Barracks Pennsylvania State Police announced Wednesday.

Troop J of Chester County's Avondale Barracks will conduct the sobriety checkpoint. The Police news statement did not specify where the checkpoint will be.

"A sobriety checkpoint is a traffic safety checkpoint wherein the Pennsylvania State Troopers systematically stop vehicles at selected locations to briefly observe drivers for articulable facts and/or behaviors normally associated with alcohol- or drug-impaired drivers," explained Troop J Public Information Officer Kevin Kochka.

Kochka said the goal of a sobriety checkpoint is to reduce the number of alcohol and drug-related fatal and serious injury crashes and to reduce the number of DUI drivers on Pennsylvania highways. In 2018 State Police made more than 20,000 DUI arrests in Pennsylvania. More recent statistics were not available.

"The Pennsylvania State Police is committed to maintaining a safe environment for the motoring public. This checkpoint is intended to achieve that goal," the Troop J news release stated.
