West Chester Artisan Retailer Has New Owner Downtown
A West Chester business that's been around through the downtown's revitalization is changing hands but still offering functional art.

WEST CHESTER, PA — A downtown West Chester retailer that served as a pillar of downtown revitalization is changing hands as a partner in the artisan gift store business takes over.
The 5 Senses, in the 100 block of West Market Street, will now be owned by Michelle Guida. After 16 years, Karen Cavin is retiring and handing the reins of ownership to Guida, her partner of 3 years. The 5 Senses has been very involved in philanthropic efforts throughout their time in business.
"When Michelle approached me about buying into the business as a partner, I was thrilled and jumped at the chance which gave me a gracious exit plan when I decided to quit and the business would not close," said Cavin "We have been through a lot together and I am excited to see Michelle take over and grow and expand the business in new ways."

Guida is enthused about what's ahead. "I'm excited to begin my journey as the new owner of The 5 Senses. I plan to continue the store's tradition of being a showplace for local and North American functional art and, as a West Chester borough resident, continue our practice of community involvement and engagement" said Guida.
Not only do Cavin and Guida have very similar artistic vision and tastes, they’ve also had fun shopping and working together, even surviving the COVID-19 shutdown as a team. The 5 Senses will still feature many of its bestselling local artists and from around North America. Expect some changes in the store's appearance but the same knowledgeable staff will still be there to assist you.

"I'm not leaving West Chester, but I am going to miss seeing all the customers who have become friends over the last 16 years. I’ll probably still be found hanging around at the store from time to time, it’s hard to give it up but it is time for me to move on and maybe get back to working with clay which I haven’t had time to do in a very long time,” Cavin said.
Cavin, Guida, and The 5 Senses staff invite the community in for First Friday on May 7. It will be Cavin's last official day. First Friday is a monthly tradition in West Chester with free metered parking in the downtown, and with stores having later evening hours.
