West Chester Green Team Hosts Free Garden Tour
See chickens, vegetables and bees at ten organic gardens across the borough and at West Chester University.

Have you ever wanted a garden but weren’t sure how to start? Or do you have a garden and want tips on making it more productive? Curious about getting access to a community garden or raising chickens in your backyard? Now is your chance to get advice and tips from West Chester’s pros. West Chester’s new Green Team has organized a free walking tour designed to elevate the collective gardening skills of the borough.
“We want people to grow their own food,” says Nathaniel Smith one of the co-founders of the Green Team and joint-organizer of the event. To help make that a reality, the group has teamed with West Chester University’s Office of Sustainability to organize a casual day with some of the area’s best gardeners.
The event will take place on Saturday, June 29 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and feature ten gardens located throughout all seven wards of the borough. Each garden is organic and all have been specially selected to highlight a specific aspect or type of garden. There are private gardens, community gardens, children’s and rain gardens. There are examples of excellence in composting and how to use native species. There are demonstrations in growing herbs and vegetables, raising chickens and bees.

Participants can start at any point on the map and make their way to each location at their own pace or they can grab a ride in the tour-provided van. Each garden will be numbered. Once a participant arrives, they will be welcomed by a greeter and will receive an information sheet on the garden. Some gardens will also have their owners on hand to share tips.
The free event is modeled, a bit after another popular Chester County tour:
“Have you ever been to Chester County House Tour Day?” asks Margaret Hudgings, the event’s other founder, “Like that.”

If you would like to take the van, meet at 425 High Street at noon. More information on the event, including a copy of the map, is available on both the Green Team and Don’t Spray Me websites.
