West Chester Man Struck Pole While DUI: Police

A West Chester man was driving under the influence when he struck a utility pole along E. Virginia Avenue, according to police.

WEST CHESTER, PA — After a vehicle hit a utility pole in West Chester on Thursday night, police determined its driver was impaired, according to a police report.

West Chester Police Department officers responded to a single-vehicle accident in the 100 block of East Virginia Avenue around 8:30 p.m. Thursday. When the officers arrived, they reported finding a single vehicle had struck a utility pole.

Their investigation determined the operator, Matthew Gibson, 49, of West Chester, was under the influence of alcohol, to the point he was unable to safely operate a vehicle, the police report said.

Gibson is charged with DUI, first offense, and with careless driving.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled in Chester County District Court 15-1-04 on Sept. 7.
