West Chester Mayor Carolyn Comitta says "Bayard Rustin (who was born and raised in West Chester) has been selected to receive the 2013 Presidential Medal of Freedom for his role as a civil rights leader and organizer of Martin Luther King’s March on Washington, 50 years ago this month. Please enjoy the email below from Walter Naegle, Partner of Rustin and Executive Director of the Bayard Rustin Fund."
The mayor and members of the West Chester Borough Council will "commemorate this historic and proud event at the start of the Borough Council meeting. The commemoration will last about 10-15 minutes and is being presented in partnership with the Chester County Historical Society. We will hear from several speakers, will have the CCHS panels on display from their 2012 Rustin Centennial display and will close with a spiritual, " Mayor Comitta said.
