The Wilkes-Barre City Fire Department will be distributing smoke alarm batteries at the Wilkes-Barre City Farmers Market on Thursday, October 7th starting at 11:00 AM. City fire fighters will offer one, Two-Pak of Duracell Coppertop 9-volt batteries per household. The distribution event is in conjunction with National Fire Prevention Week (October 3-9, 2021).

Three out of every five home fire deaths occurred in homes without working smoke alarms.  54% of homes nationwide do have a WORKING smoke alarm. Smoke alarm batteries should be changed once a year. 

In addition, Wilkes-Barre City Fire Fighters will be discussing the importance of working smoke alarms to the general public and will be distributing fire safety educational handouts and children’s fire safety activity books.
