(Scranton, PA – November, 2023)- 37-year-old Hop Bottom, Pa., resident and one of the newest owners with Pillar To Post Home Inspectors® Erik Rubin said, “After opening my first restaurant at 23-years-old, I knew I could never work for someone else.” And therein starts the story. Launching operations in November, Rubin will serve homebuyers and sellers throughout the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre metropolitan area with the largest home inspection franchise in North America.

Rubin has some serious chops when it comes to home inspections and delivering on what clients expect when preparing to make what will typically be the biggest investment of their lives. In 2016, Rubin went into homebuilding in the Hamptons on Long Island, N.Y., in search of a better work/life balance. “My attention to detail, organizational skills and customer-service-forward attitude helped me find a niche with high-end clients,” he said.

Oh, and it should be mentioned that prior to getting into homebuilding, Rubin was a chef from 2009 to 2016 at celebrity chef Bobby Flay’s Bar Americain In New York City, before opening his own restaurant, aptly called “Mark.” Rubin also won an episode of the Food Network’s “24 Hour Restaurant Battle” – where two teams competed to see who had the best deli food – and he appeared on several segments of “Martha Stewart Radio” on SiriusXM.

“I believe the same qualities that I found as a chef and carried over into homebuilding will translate into the home inspection business,” Rubin said. “I’m something of a serial entrepreneur and that’s a trait I want to pass onto my own kids. I want them to see that if they work hard and find the right system to support them, they can do whatever they dream of.”

Rubin’s timing for launching his new career couldn’t be better. Home inspections have become a vital part of the real estate sector, providing buyers and sellers with reliable information about the condition and value of a property. The U.S. building inspector industry, measured by revenue, is estimated to have a market size of $4.9 billion according to global research firm IBISWorld. Pillar to Post Home Inspectors has been at the forefront with its outstanding and innovative technologies that were introduced just in time to provide contactless home inspections during the pandemic.

Rubin is a perfect fit for Pillar To Post Home Inspectors and the business model affords him the opportunity to structure his business as he sees fit, whether hiring employees or doing it all himself. One thing is certain, Rubin couldn’t be more eager to launch the next chapter of his life as a small business owner and relish the opportunities it will afford him and his family.

With his homebuilding knowledge, Rubin has always been willing to offer advice to his friends when they were buying homes of their own. When one friend mentioned that he should consider doing it as a side job, Rubin took his words to heart and “started digging into the path to becoming a home inspector,” he said.

Rubin discussed the idea with his wife and the couple hatched a plan for him to change careers and move the family to an area where they could realize the dream they had harbored for years. “Ever since working in Yellowstone National Park for two summers during college, I have searched for a way to get back the feeling of living alongside nature,” Rubin said. “My wife and I have shared that dream ever since I took her and our oldest daughter to the park in 2017. Since that time, we had always kept a vegetable garden in our backyard on Long Island and even began keeping chickens two years ago, but it wasn’t enough.”

They found their nirvana in northeast Pennsylvania, where they have a gaggle of farm animals and an acre of land ready to plant in the spring. And to make that dream a reality, Rubin turned to Pillar To Post Home Inspectors, because he realized the advantages a franchise provided. “I knew that franchising was going to be the best way to go to get my business up and running as quickly as possible with the best technology available,” said Rubin, who vetted a number of home inspection franchisors. “Pillar To Post Home Inspectors was the best one out there.”

Today’s homebuyer – especially in the ever-changing housing market – would be wise to turn to Pillar To Post Home Inspectors, given some recent findings. According to Clever Real Estate, 72 percent of homebuyers who purchased in 2021 or 2022 have regrets over their home purchase. The most common factors that contributed to their remorse were spending too much money and rushing into buying.

And there are some other important considerations to mull in addition to a home’s square footage and number of bathrooms. Clever’s survey also found that almost half of homebuyers – 43 percent – made financial concessions like waiving a home inspection amid fierce competition for homes, according to CNBC. And skipping that home inspection can be costly. A survey from insurance firm Hippo found that most homeowners – 77 percent – had to pay for an unexpected repair within the first year of owning a house. Two-thirds of respondents said those fixes cost more than $1,000, said the CNBC report.

“Now that interest rates have gone up, people are more discerning about their home purchases and not just buying anything that becomes available,” Rubin said. “That means home inspections will becoming a more important part of the home-buying process than they have been in the past couple of years.”
