Monday Essentials: Scary Movie, History of Jazz, Healthcare Seminar, Grand Reopening

Take a look ahead in Barrington this week.

Here are some things to know about this week, Oct. 14-20, in and around Barrington:

The Barrington Garden Club presents guest speaker Kaye Vosburgh, a certified Sogetsu Ikebana teacher, who will create basic and free-style Ikebana designs. She will also discuss the history of Ikebana. Guests are always welcome. The fee is $5 per person. Refreshments will be served prior to a meeting and the Ikebana program.

Join librarian and film enthusiast Doug Swiszcz at 1 pm on Wednesday, Oct. 16, for the third matinee movie of his fall 2013 series, “Things That Go Bump in the Night.” This week’s film is Rosemary’s Baby, starring Mia Farrow as a young bride who learns she is pregnant just as the career of her struggling actor husband (John Cassavetes)  takes off. The Roman Polanski movie is an adaptation of Ira Levin’s novel and is rated R for profanity, some sexuality the frightening sequences. Swiszcz always provides pre-film commentary.

Author Patricia Herlihy talks about her book, Vodka: A Global History, on Thursday at 6 pm at Barrington Books. The book explores the cultural history of this alcoholic beverage that has been a staple of Slavic lands for more than 600 years and is now the rising star in America whether drunk straight, infused, flavored or mixed. The history of vodka is a story of an old spirit that has become the perfect postmodern drink. Mysterious in its origin, beguiling in its allure, vodka is a rising star.
