Rainbow Loom Workshop at Nayatt School Shows Love in Girl's Heart

Mia LeRoux, 8, of Barrington loves the Rainbow Loom craze – making multi-colored bracelets out of rubber bands. But it’s not making the bracelets that pleases her the most; it’s giving them away.

That’s what has led to the birth of the nonprofit Looms for Love.

And today, Oct. 4, from 1 to 2 pm, Mia and other volunteers will lead a Looms for Love workshop at Nayatt School to make the colorful jewelry to give away to hospitalized kids and senior citizens to wear.

It was a visit to her grandfather’s nursing home that gave her the idea for Looms for Love. He asked her about the bracelets she was wearing. Mia took them off, gave two to her grandfather and gave the rest to other nursing home residents. 

The reception to her generosity was not lost on her. She told her parents she wanted to make a lot more of the bracelets.

“I don’t really need to wear a lot of them, I would rather make them for other kids or give other kids stuff to make them,” said Mia.

The workshop is part of an effort to collect 500 bracelets by Nov. 1 – all to be donated to area nursing homes or children in hospitals.

Looms for Love volunteers will work with the pupils to create the loom jewelry and handwritten notes to share with the children and nursing home residents. 

Looms for Love also raises money to purchase kits and craft supplies.

“Everyone deserves a little rainbow in their heart,” said Mia.
