Rams, Dunphy Ground Eagles for Title

The La Salle Rams steamrolled Barrington, 62-29, for the girls’ basketball state title Sunday afternoon at the Ryan Center on the University of Rhode Island Kingston’s campus.

La Salle led by 10 points throughout most of the first half, increasing the margin to 35-22 at halftime. A stifling defense and Barrington’s frustration with foul calls against them led to just seven points for the Eagles in the second half.

While the Rams did seem to get the benefit of more calls, La Salle also played a more skilled and aggressive game. The Rams finished when given opportunities down low, and their press harassed the Eagles into turnovers throughout both halves.

Also, unfortunately for the Eagles, the best player from Barrington on Sunday was wearing a La Salle jersey. Priscilla Dunphy finished with 17 points and four steals. She was named to the All-Tournament team.

For Barrington, seniors Caitlyn Nolan and Maggie O’Hayer, and junior Maura Kelty were forced to carry the load offensively. However, they had little success against La Salle’s press and interior defense.

Nolan had a team-high 10 points. Kelty scored 9 points, all in the first half, and O’Hayer had 8 points despite being in foul trouble much of the night.

Kelty was named player of the game for Barrington. Nolan and Kelty were named to the All-Tournament team.

Sarah Middleton was the only other Eagle to score, as she hit a field goal in the first half. Starter Caroline Coleman didn’t score, but had three blocks.
