Updated: Bristol Crews Respond To Fire Thursday

No one was hurt in a fire Thursday morning at a Poppasquash Road home.

BRISTOL, RI — No one was hurt in a fire Thursday morning at a home on Poppasquash Road home. According to fire Chief Michael DeMello, the first alarm was sounded around 9:25. It came from the house's system. The fire marshal was first on scene and saw flames shooting from the roof.

The cause of the fire, which is still under investigation, appears to have been electrical or mechanical.

"It took a good half hour" to put it out, he said. The fire was in the attic, and duct work for central air conditioning made it difficult to reach. The fire went into the walls, and the crews had to pull ceilings down to attack it.

The family could not return to the home.

"It's fixable, but it will take a while,' he said. No firefighters or pets were hurt, he said. No residents were home when the fire started.

"They had left around 8," he said.

Cold temperatures made the firefighting "challenging," he said. The hoses start to freeze up after the fire's mostly knocked down and they're not in use. Plus, there are no hydrants on the entire point where the house is located.
