State Police Say More Reports Received about Former Coach [UPDATE]

Spokeswoman Any Kempe of the Rhode Island Attorney General's office confirmed this afternoon that Perry remains held without bail until a determination of attorney hearing scheduled for Dec. 27.

A pre-trial hearing is scheduled for Jan. 16.

More people have contacted the Rhode Island State Police about Richard Perry, 55, the former youth sports coach and Kickemuit Middle School custodian who was arrested last week on child molestation charges, Lt. Benjamin Barney confirmed.

Investigators are "in the process of vetting" those reports and determining whether more charges may be filed, Barney said during a phone interview on Thursday.

Barney also explained that the four felony counts filed against Perry — two each of first- and second-degree child molestation — were based on testimony provided by one person alleging assaults by Perry between 1998 and 2005.

Asked whether police had determined whether the alleged victim had been a player for one of the sports teams that Perry coached, or a student at Kickemuit, Barney said available reports "didn't indicate how they became acquainted."

Following Perry's arrest on Dec. 13, Magistrate Susan Kenny ordered him held without bail at the Adult Correctional Institutions, Cranston.

Perry was due to appear for formal arraignment in Providence County Superior Court yesterday. No information from the hearing had been posted online by the end of business on Thursday.
