COVENTRY, RI — Coventry's police K9 will receive protective body armor, free of charge, from the nonprofit organization Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. K9 Nixo's bullet- and stab-proof vest is expected to arrive in eight to ten weeks, the department said.

The nonprofit had provided police dogs with potentially life-saving protective gear since its founding in 2009. Each vest is custom-made in the United States. To date, the organization has donated more than 4,500 vests to K9s in every state, worth approximately $6.9 million.

A donation of $960 pays for one vest, which is valued at approximately $2,000 once finished. Donations can be made through the organization's website.
