Coventry Raccoon Tests Postive for Rabies

Police said the animal was captured after a report of contact with dogs and later tested positive for rabies after testing.

COVENTRY, RI—A raccoon captured in Coventry has tested positive for rabies.

Coventry Police Chief Col. John MacDonald said that police responded to a Sharon Drive residence on Thursday at 3 p.m. for a report of dogs having contact with a raccoon.

The Animal Control Officer captured the raccoon for testing by the state Department of Health, which later confirmed the animal was positive for rabies.

"We would like to encourage pet owners to check their animal’s rabies status," the police chief said in a news release. "If your animal is not vaccinated or you are unsure if your pet is vaccinated for rabies please do so as soon as possible. "
