Parks & Rec Director Discusses Greenway Construction, Closure

Months after a new construction project began, causing caution signs and barricades to appear along the western end of Coventry's Greenway bike path, some more light is shed on what can be expected from the finished project.

In an investigation by The Hummel Report, Coventry Parks & Recreation Director Guy Lefebvre outlined the year-long, multi-million dollar upgrade for a 2.7 mile stretch from Station Street to Town Farm Road that will include a parallel horse trail when it is finished later this year.

He also discussed the reasoning behind completely closing off to the public, the portion of the trail currently under construction - a subject of much dissension among residents who regularly use the path.

Lefebvre told Jim Hummel that there are simply too many risks associated with the kinds of construction being done on the trail to allow people access during the update. Excavation, drainage, heavy equipment, hazardous materials and missing pavement are just some of the conditions currently found within the work-site that could pose a danger to Greenway users.

In the report, State Senator Lou Raptakis voiced his concern about the placement of the future equestrian trail as well as the possibility of negative interactions between horses and other Greenway users.
