Serpa Recognized for Efforts in Support of Recovery Community

The Phoenix House honored Rep. Patricia Serpa with the James H. Ottmar Award during its annual Community Service Awards Luncheon.

The Rhode Island Council on Alcoholism and Other Drug Dependence (RICAODD) recognized Representative Patricia A. Serpa (D-Dist. 27, Coventry, Warwick, West Warwick) Thursday at the Phoenix House’s 44th annual Community Service Awards Luncheon. She was honored for her work to aid and protect those suffering from addiction.

The Phoenix House presented Rep. Serpa with the James H. Ottmar Award, which recognizes a respected community or business leader who is not afraid to serve as a voice for those who are unable to be heard due to alcoholism or drug addiction.

“I am absolutely honored that this organization would choose me for this recognition, and I hope to continue to serve those in need in any way I can,” Serpa said. “Addiction is a struggle that not all of us have been through, but I think it’s important as a human being to acknowledge that it does exist and that some people have to fight every day of their lives in order to avoid succumbing to it. It is because of the wonderful programs at Phoenix House that people have somewhere to turn. The community is eternally grateful for the safe haven it provides.”

Rep. Serpa also had the honor of being the torchbearer at this past Saturday’s Providence Waterfire in light of the 2013 National Recovery Month, which is aimed at promoting the social benefits of prevention, treatment and recovery for mental and substance use disorders. She said it is important to celebrate people in recovery and work hard to rid the world of the stigmas that still come with the recovery process.

RICAODD has been instrumental in assisting the most vulnerable members of the community through its Referral Helpline and Recovery Housing Program. The goal of the program is to give those with substance abuse problems the referrals and resources they need to seek treatment and provide safe, supportive and affordable housing. The Phoenix House is one of the region’s premier nonprofit substance abuse treatment agencies, serving more than 3,500 individuals each year through 45 programs and facilities throughout New England.
