Former Town Councilman Arrested for Alleged Domestic Assault

A former East Greenwich town councilman was arrested Saturday after he allegedly assaulted the victim after an argument.

EAST GREENWICH, RIβ€”A former Town Councilman has been arrested for an alleged domestic assault on Saturday.

Michael S. Kiernan, 48, of 63 Church St., East Greenwich, was arrested Saturday night after police responded to his address for a report of a domestic disturbance.

According to a police report, the victim told police that Kiernan pushed her head into a wall during an argument.

Police said Kiernan told responding officers that the victim thought he had been out drinking and wanted him to take a portable breathalyzer.

"When she handed it to him, a struggle began between the two of them," the report stated. "He refused to state any more facts about what transpired."

Police said the victim suffered injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Keirnan was previously arrested for an alleged domestic assault last year. Those charges were eventually dismissed.

Kiernan was a three-term councilman first elected in 2008. He did not seek reelection in 2014.

Kiernan was arrested without incident and later released on $1,000 personal recognizance. He is due to appear in Third Division District Court on July 1 for arraignment.

A no-contact order was filed.
