KCWA Confirms Second Negative Test for E. Coli

Kent County Water Authority Tuesday announced the second water test in as many days that has come back negative when tested for E. coli, a bacteria originating from animal and human waste.

Approximately 25,000 KCWA customers have been under a water-boil advisory since Sunday after a water storage tank in West Warwick tested positive for the bacteria. The tank has since been isolated from the rest of the Authority's system. Representatives from KCWA and the Department of Health have stated that the advisory will stay in effect until three consecutive water supply tests come back negative for E. coli.

Despite much public outcry, KCWA officials have stated that credits will not be applied to customer accounts as there has not been a disruption in service. Customers have been advised to boil water before use, but the system remains fully operational.

According to Health Department Director Michael Fine, no illnesses have been reported. 

The source of the E. coli has yet to be determined and the water tank in question remains out of service as of Tuesday afternoon.

A third round of tests is currently being performed, of which results are expected by Wednesday afternoon.
