Obituary: Steven J. Simms, 96

He was one of the founding members of the East Greenwich Little League.

Steven J. Simms, 96, died peacefully at Scalabrini Villa on Nov. 9. Born in South Boston, he was the son of the late Mary (Latvis) and Andrew Simanavicius. He was married to the late Ellen (Warren) Simms for 69 years. 

He is survived by his sons, George of East Greenwich and Richard of Barrington and their wives Peggy and Elvi. He has five grandchildren, Michael, David, Andrew and Mark Simms and Elin Simms Agoston. He is also survived by four great grandchildren, Luke, Caitlyn, Kelsey and Lillian. He was predeceased by a sister, Helen. 

In his youth he lettered in basketball, football and baseball. He shared his love of baseball as one of the founding members of the East Greenwich Little League, managing the team of Dairy and Finn to a championship. An avid golfer, he shot a hole in one at Jamestown Golf Club in 1975. Mr. Simms served in the U.S. Navy for four years and retired in 1982 as a Safety Compliance Officer for OSHA.

He was a parishioner of Our Lady of Mercy Parish for 66 years serving as a Eucharistic Minister, on the Paris Council and member of the Knights of Columbus and Holy Name Society. 

His funeral will be Thursday, Nov. 14, at 9 a.m. from the Hill Funeral Home, 822 Main St., East Greenwich, with a concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Mercy Church, 65 Third St., East Greenwich. Burial will be St. Patrick Cemetery, East Greenwich. Calling hours: Wednesday, Nov. 13, from 5 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to Our Lady of Mercy School or Scalabrini Villa.
