Weekend Agenda: Art At The Armory & Cemetery Cleanup

On Saturday …

Cemetery cleanup: Our historic cemetery watchdog Alan Clarke (a member of the RI Advisory Commission on Historic Cemeteries) says the first scheduled cleanup of the fall takes place Saturday at 9 a.m. at the cemeteries on the right along Cedar Avenue just west of Middle Road. Alan is looking for people to adopt a cemetery this season – there are at least 60 historic cemeteries in need of care.

Art at the Armory Preview: Preview an exhibition of selected artworks from the collections of the Varnum Armory and the James Mitchell House museums. Enjoy hors d’oeuvres, wine, music, and – of course – art. $50 per person. The proceeds will go to helping preserve the Varnum Museum collections for generations to come. At 5 p.m.

America’s Cup champ & Rocky Hill alum in town: Rocky Hill School is welcoming back to campus America's Cup winner and Newport native Rome Kirby on Saturday. Kirby, a 2007 graduate of Rocky Hill School, was the only American-born member of Oracle Team USA, which completed an improbable comeback in the final race of the 34th America's Cup last month. He will be on Rocky Hill Β to speak to the community as part of the school's Homecoming festivities, from 12:15 to 1 p.m.

Gold’s Open House: Workout for free all day at Gold’s Gym, 1000 Division St. You can try all the group classes, have a light breakfast, and visit vendor tables for service and product samples from 9 a.m. to noon. This happens only once every quarter.

Tea Party with Josefina: Barnes & Noble is holding for a special American Girl Tea Party with Josefina where visitors can learn about Josefina's Hispanic culture and making a special craft. 3 p.m.

On Sunday …

Art at the Armory: Artwork from the collections of the Varnum Armory Museum and the Varnum House Museum will be on exhibit on the β€œdrill floor” of the Armory on Main Street, along with selected posters from the Armory’s vast collection of WWI and WWII recruiting and propaganda posters. Open from noon to 5 p.m. Free.

Grief Support: This group at Christ Church is open to anyone who is grieving the loss of a loved one. Each session begins with a video followed by discussion. Through helpful insights and caring and compassionate discussion, the healing process can begin. 2 p.m. For more information, contact the Christ Church office at 884-8632 or info@christchurchec.org.
