An East Providence Policeman was taking a report at the Riviera Restaurant on N. Broadway about an assault there Oct. 19 at 10:48 p.m., when the alleged attacker got into a second fight.
The officer spoke to the victim, who said Victor Tavares, 27, of 19 Pekin St., Apt. 2, a family friend, had shown up at the restaurant during a family celebration, and asked to speak to him outside, according to police reports. The two men exited the building to the south side to speak, but Tavares punched him in the stomach, knocking him down and causing a small cut to his head, the man told the officer.
The victim described Tavares as tall and wearing a dark suit. While the officer was taking the report, a fight broke out inside the restaurant, and the victim's family pointed the officer to one of the persons involved, who was Tavares.
Tavares was arrested and transported to the East Providence Police Department. He was charged with simple assault and disorderly conduct. He is scheduled to appear in Sixth District Court for a pre-trial conference on Nov. 5.
