• Tabletop Pressure Wave Generator Could Help Study Explosive Blasts That Lead to Military Brain Injury (usmedicine.com) — Researchers at the University of Rhode Island in Kingston have built a low-cost tabletop device that mimics explosive blast waves, potentially transforming how scientists study military-related brain injuries. By using stem cell–derived brain organoids instead of animals, the team can model traumatic brain injury and related neurodegenerative diseases more affordably, while acknowledging the system’s current limitations and need for further validation.
   

• URI Coastal Institute announces 2025 Emerging Coastal Leaders (uri.edu) — URI’s Kingston campus is spotlighting coastal innovation with its 2025 Emerging Coastal Leaders awards, honoring 10 graduate students whose work tackles issues from Narragansett Bay nutrients to PFAS contamination and offshore wind. Their research supports evidence-based decisions for Rhode Island’s coasts, fisheries, and communities, and they were recently recognized at the Coastal Institute’s mid-year meeting.
   

• URI inducts 15 retired faculty, staff members into Lifetime Service Society (uri.edu) — URI recently honored 15 longtime faculty and staff in Kingston by inducting them into the Lifetime Service Society at the Higgins Welcome Center, with commemorative bricks to be installed outside Carothers Library on the Kingston Campus. The ceremony highlighted decades of service, posthumous tributes, and the deep impact these employees had on generations of students.
